8-Day Kilimanjaro Climb – Northern Circuit Route

Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp

  • Distance: 6 km
  • Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
  • Start/End Elevation: 2,250 m to 2,820 m
  • Vegetation Zone: Rainforest

Begin your trek with a scenic drive to Londorossi Gate, followed by registration and briefing. Continue driving to the Lemosho trailhead, where your hike starts through lush montane forest. The trail is quiet, with sightings of monkeys, turacos, and towering trees.

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp

  • Distance: 8 km
  • Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
  • Start/End Elevation: 2,820 m to 3,500 m
  • Vegetation Zone: Moorland

Today’s trek leads you out of the forest and onto the Shira Plateau. The vegetation opens up as you climb through heathland and onto moorland, with amazing views toward Kibo Peak. You may spot antelope and birds along the trail.

Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Moir Hut

  • Distance: 14 km
  • Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
  • Start/End Elevation: 3,500 m to 4,150 m
  • Vegetation Zone: Moorland

You cross the Shira Plateau, one of the highest on the continent, enjoying open terrain and dramatic volcanic formations. After passing Shira 2, you climb to Moir Hut, a secluded campsite at the base of a huge lava ridge.

Day 4: Moir Hut to Pofu Camp via Buffalo Camp

  • Distance: 12 km
  • Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
  • Start/End Elevation: 4,150 m to 4,020 m
  • Vegetation Zone: Alpine Desert

After a short acclimatization hike in the morning, you traverse the remote northern slopes of Kilimanjaro. The scenery is stark and dramatic, with sweeping views into Kenya. You’ll pass Buffalo Camp before continuing to Pofu Camp, a peaceful site rarely visited by other trekkers.

Day 5: Pofu Camp to Third Cave Camp

  • Distance: 8 km
  • Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
  • Start/End Elevation: 4,020 m to 3,870 m
  • Vegetation Zone: Alpine Desert

Your journey continues eastward around the mountain. You’ll hike through dry alpine terrain with beautiful vistas of both the plains below and the towering summit above. The day ends at Third Cave Camp, another remote site that provides superb acclimatization.

Day 6: Third Cave Camp to School Hut

  • Distance: 5 km
  • Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
  • Start/End Elevation: 3,870 m to 4,750 m
  • Vegetation Zone: Alpine Desert

This day brings you closer to your summit base. The trail leads steadily uphill toward School Hut, your final camp before summit night. The landscape becomes increasingly barren, and the excitement builds as the peak looms overhead.

Day 7: School Hut to Uhuru Peak – Descend to Mweka Camp

  • Distance: 6 km ascent + 12 km descent
  • Hiking Time: 12–14 hours
  • Start/High/End Elevation: 4,750 m → 5,895 m → 3,100 m
  • Vegetation Zones: Arctic to Moorland

Summit day begins at midnight with a tough but rewarding climb to Gilman’s Point (5,685 m) and onward to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). Watch the sunrise from the highest point in Africa, then descend back to Barafu or Kibo for rest and lunch, before continuing downhill to Mweka Camp.

Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate – Return to Moshi/Arusha

  • Distance: 10 km
  • Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
  • Start/End Elevation: 3,100 m to 1,640 m

Enjoy a final descent through the lush rainforest, where the trail is often slippery. Upon reaching Mweka Gate, you’ll receive your summit certificate and meet your vehicle for transfer back to your hotel—ready for celebration and well-deserved rest.
